An Iowa City man’s alleged assault on a woman caused her to lose consciousness.

Officers were called to the bus stop at Washington and Clinton Streets on September 23rd on reports of an unconscious female.  Witnesses said that 33-year-old Jaren Brooks of the Town and Campus Apartments on Arthur Street grabbed the woman and threw her to the ground.  Surveillance video from the scene allegedly showed Brooks grabbed the woman by the front of her shirt and pulled her towards him.  As he yelled at the woman, he slapped her in the face with both hands, then grabbed her face and shoved her to the ground.

The woman’s head hit the concrete with enough force to cause her to lose consciousness. Brooks was allegedly seen on camera walking away.

The couple are reportedly in an intimate relationship, but Brooks would not say how long they have been together.

He was taken into custody and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault causing Injury, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail sentence of up to one year if convicted.
