Members of the Linn Mar LGBTQ+ group Spectrum were attacked during the school’s homecoming parade this week.

A parent reported that someone threw a boxcutter at the group as they passed by on their float Wednesday.

Linn-Mar Community School District officials said in a statement they were “saddened” to learn about the incident at the parade and are working with local police on its investigation.

The Des Moines Register reports the district is interviewing students and staff for “internal purposes,” with Marion police leading a formal investigation. Officer Tom Daubs, spokesperson for the Marion Police Department, said they learned about the incident through a FBI tip line message and the investigation is ongoing.

In a statement, Iowa Safe Schools condemned the attack and blamed recent legislation for creating a “hostile environment” in the state that enables incidents like this.

A GoFundMe page to raise money for a scholarship fund for students in Spectrum has hit nearly $4200.
