A Shellsburg Iowa man staying at Hope House has been charged with a felony after allegedly possessing contraband.

37-year-old Curtis Delavergne was in his room at the halfway house the morning of April 30th when a head count was being conducted. A residential officer reportedly noticed him hiding something, and Delavergne eventually produced a piece of rolled paper.  He denied that the paper contained any illegal substance.

The paper was sent to the Department of Criminal Investigation for further testing. The lab confirmed that the paper contained a Schedule 1 controlled substance.

A warrant was requested, and Delavergne was charged Monday with Possession of Contraband in a Correctional Institution.  If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to five years in prison.

Delavergne has a long criminal record and has drug possession cases currently in the courts.
