An Iowa City man was taken into custody after allegedly entering false information to attempt a weapons purchase.

Police say 21-year-old Clifton Kelly of Prairie Du Chien Road was at Scheels the afternoon of August 14th with the intent of purchasing a Stoeger 9mm pistol.  He filled out the required paperwork and was denied through a check showing him currently under indictment on a felony Controlled Substance violation.

Iowa City Police interviewed Kelly, who admitted knowing about the active felony case and allegedly admitted to being a drug user. The paperwork he filed at Scheels indicated otherwise.

A warrant was issued September 3rd; he was arrested and was released on his own recognizance after his initial court appearance on September 9th. If convicted on the charge of False Information in Acquiring a Weapon, he could be sentenced to up to five years in prison.
