A parolee from Cedar Rapids is accused of stealing a construction trailer in Tiffin.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office says just after 9:15 on the night of August 31st 50-year-old David Smith of 13th Avenue SW pulled his 2006 GMC Denali up to a construction trailer parked on Whitetail Lane, hooked it to the back of his vehicle, and drove away. The trailer is valued at $4,500, with the tools inside worth an estimated $12,000.

The vehicle can be seen on doorbell cameras in the area at the time of the incident, and it was seen getting gas at the North Liberty Kwik Star about nine minutes after the theft. The driver of the Denali can be seen on Kwik Star security cameras paying cash for the gas. The image of his face was run through Clearview AI, which matched it with Smith’s image from previous booking photos.

Smith was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 1:00 Thursday afternoon and charged with 1st Degree Theft, 5th Degree Theft, and a parole violation. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of over ten years in prison.
