A truck found submerged in Coralville Lake last month dates back to a 1970’s car theft.
That’s according to a news release sent out by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. The revelation ends an investigation that began in March, when fishermen using sonar found the truck in about 20 feet of water near West Overlook and the eastern shoreline.
Through a coordinated effort with the Johnson County Metro Dive Team, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, Tegeler Wrecker & Crane, and Johnson County Emergency Management, the vehicle was recovered on August 20th. The Johnson County Metro Dive team was able to use several public safety divers, lift bags, and towing equipment to extract the truck.
The unoccupied vehicle has now been identified as a 1969 Datsun truck that had been reported stolen to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office in 1977. The vehicle is presumed to have been in the water for several decades.
The owner of the truck has been notified, and due to the length of time involved, any criminal charges involved are beyond the statute of limitations. The sheriff’s office said Wednesday it now considers the investigation into the matter closed.
