A Waterloo man was arrested Sunday afternoon after allegedly trying to steal thousands in merchandise from a downtown Iowa City department store.

Loss Prevention at the Washington Street Target store reportedly observed 32-year-old Keenan Harris shoving various items into a bag.  He then allegedly passed all points of purchase and attempted to exit the store, ignoring employees who tried to stop him.

Harris was met outside by police; he reportedly turned and ran back inside the store, ignoring their commands to stop. He was eventually apprehended in an aisle a short time later.

The total cost of the items Harris was attempting to steal exceeded $2900.

He was taken into custody and charged with 2nd degree theft, a Class D Felony punishable by a prison term of up to five years if convicted.
