A Hope House escapee accused of an assault with injury while he was on the run is now back in custody.

31-year-old Davonte Coleman was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 8:00 Saturday night. Hope House officials say Coleman signed out of the Coralville facility on January 31st with a listed return time of 7:00 that night. Coleman called the Holiday Road halfway house at 6:24 p.m. to say he’d missed his bus and was waiting for the next one. He never returned.

Coralville Police say while he was on the run, Coleman assaulted another man at the Iowa Lodge on the Coralville Strip just before 1:30 on the morning of May 14th. Coleman reportedly struck the victim multiple times with his hands and stomped on his foot. The man suffered cuts and bruises on his inner lip and had to have his entire large right toenail removed. Arrest records indicate Coleman was staying at Iowa City’s Shelter House at the time of the incident, despite being wanted by police.

Coleman now faces charges of Absence From Custody and Assault Causing Bodily Injury. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of two years in jail.
