Just in time for the Hawkeye football opening weekend, the Dubuque Street reconstruction project has neared the end.

The project, which began in March, involved updating the roadway and pedestrian sidewalks, installing a new water main, sanitary sewer and storm sewer systems, and new lighting.

The City said it would have the street fully reopened to pedestrian and vehicle traffic by the end of the day Friday. Street parking will be available, but will be limited due to touch-up work.

Pavement markings are to be painted in the coming week on the southeast corner of Dubuque Street and Iowa Avenue.

The project continues until mid-fall on the alley between Dubuque and Linn Street, near the Sports Column and Studio 13.

The city plans more extensive projects in the next several years to update the entire downtown area.
