A Grinnell man was arrested early Saturday after a gun reportedly fell out of his pocket after being escorted from a downtown Iowa City bar.

Just after 12:30am, 34-year-old Robert Walton was removed from Elray’s Live and Dive on Iowa Avenue due to his reported high level of intoxication. As he was being escorted out, a gun allegedly fell out of his pocket.

Walton was later located by police nearby, and he tried to run. He was tackled by an officer, who suffered a hand injury in the process.

Walton reportedly had a strong odor of ingested alcohol, bloodshot watery eyes and slurred speech. Officers learned that a female on scene was the subject of a no-contact order involving Walton.

He was charged with Dominion or Control of a Firearm by a Domestic Abuser, Person ineligible to Carry Dangerous Weapons, Public Intoxication, Interference with Official Acts causing Bodily Injury, and Violation of a No-Contact Order. If convicted, Walton could be sentenced to up to over seven years in prison.
