The Iowa City Community School District has decided to demolish the building that once housed Hills Elementary School.
In a Wednesday afternoon news release, district officials say they worked with representatives from the City of Hills to determine the site’s future after the district closed the school at the end of the 2023-24 school year. The news release says after extensive discussions and evaluations, both parties concluded that the demolition of the building was the most practical option, given that the City of Hills determined that the building, in its current layout, did not meet the city’s needs.
The district says several factors were taken into consideration, including potential uses for the building, costs associated with maintenance and renovation, and the long-term vision for the site. Both the district and the City of Hills say they are committed to ensuring that the land will be utilized in a manner that benefits the community.
The demolition process is expected to begin in the coming months, with efforts to minimize disruption to the surrounding area. The district says additional information will be made available as details are finalized.
