Iowa City Police were forced to commandeer a city transit bus after a burglary suspect refused to get off.
According to arrest records, officers had knowledge that 35-year-old transient Tamira Johnson was on Iowa City Transit bus #104 just before 5:30 Friday night. Johnson had a warrant for her arrest after skipping an August 12th court date on charges of 3rd Degree Burglary, 3rd Degree Criminal Mischief and 4th Degree Theft. Police stopped the bus near the intersection of William Street and Wayne Avenue, but Johnson reportedly refused to get off the bus. Johnson allegedly physically resisted attempts to take her into custody, so the officers had the bus driven directly to the Johnson County Jail. Jail deputies were required to drag Johnson into booking, where two small baggies of what was believed to be methamphetamine were found hidden inside her pants.
Johnson is charged with Interference With Official Acts and Possession of Contraband in a Correctional Institution. If convicted on all current counts against her, Johnson faces a maximum of over 13 years in prison.
Johnson is accused of stealing $350 in cigarettes from Up In Smoke on Broadway Street after smashing a window with a brick just after 3:30 on the morning of April 15th.
