A Coralville woman accused of embezzling funds from the Iowa City Girls Softball Association while she was treasurer has reached a plea deal with prosecutors.

The Gazette reports 42-year-old Laura Mangrich allegedly stole over $29,500 between May 2020 and October 2023. Her crime was discovered when the new treasurer audited the books and reported it to Iowa City Police. The association board asked Mangrich for account statements that she refused to provide.

Mangrich is also accused of setting up a new account for the new treasurer, Janeen Van Etten, and president Scott Frerich while holding onto the old account to allegedly conceal past transactions. Van Etten and Frerich went to the bank themselves and discovered the two accounts and misappropriations of funds.

Mangrich pleaded in July to second-degree theft, a felony, and unauthorized use of a credit card, an aggravated misdemeanor. The other charge of first-degree fraudulent practice will be dismissed at sentencing, according to the plea agreement. She has paid full restitution.

She faces up to five years in prison, with the counts served concurrently, when sentenced September 16th.
