Cedar Rapids house fires under investigation

Two house fires Monday are being investigated by the Cedar Rapids Fire Department.

According to a release, dispatchers got a call reporting the first fire at 12:18 pm. Crews went to the 1100 block of 8th Street SE and found the back of the single-family home on fire. Firefighters were able to get the blaze under control quickly, but the home suffered heavy fire damage.

One adult male was home at the time of the incident, but was able to escape without injury.  It is unknown if smoke alarms were functional.

Crews were called out again at 11:15pm for reports of a fire on the 1000 block of 20th Street SE. Arriving crews found fire showing from the back side of the 1 ½ story home.  They extinguished the blaze and were able to protect the detached garage from damage.

Two adult males, one adult female and one child were able to get out of the house without injury.  The home suffered heavy fire damage.

Both incidents remain under investigation.
