In a rare move, the University of Iowa has already named the hero who will represent the state at the annual Heroes Game between the Iowa and Nebraska football teams.

Former Perry principal Dan Marburger was killed while trying to protect students from a shooting at the school on January 4th. An 11-year-old was killed in the shooting, and six other people were injured. The 17-year-old student who opened fire also died of a self-inflicted gunshot.

Normally, fans are encouraged to submit nominations for the hero. But Hawkeye Athletic Director Beth Goetz issued a statement on Thursday saying that because of the outpouring of suggestions to the university following the shooting, Marburger was an obvious choice. His wife Elizabeth told school officials that her late husband loved Hawkeye football, making the selection the perfect fit.

The Hawkeyes and Cornhuskers meet on Friday night, November 29th AT 6:30 inside Kinnick Stadium. The game can be seen on NBC.
