The City of Coralville is conducting an inspection of the sanitary sewer system this week to determine pipe condition and help identify which sewers have blockage and require cleaning.

According to a release from the city, they’ve contracted with a company called InfoSense Inc. During the inspection, a transmitter sends tones to a receiver in a downstream manhole, and compares the tones with tones it should hear in a clean pipe.

Roughly 50,000 feet of sanitary sewers will be inspected, as well as 225 manholes, in an area north of I-80, south of Oakdale Boulevard, east of 12th Avenue, and west of 1st Avenue. A small number of sanitary sewers will also be inspected just north of Oakdale Boulevard and south of Mesquite Drive, between 12th Avenue and Poplar Street.

The sanitary sewer transports sewage from sinks, bathrooms, kitchens, floor drains, and other plumbing to a wastewater treatment plant; it is separate from storm sewers, which transport stormwater.

Completion of the inspections is expected to be Monday July 29th.
