A local transient with as lengthy recent criminal history is accused of assaulting Iowa City Police officers after defying a no-contact order.

Arrest records indicate the ICPD was called to 501 Southgate Avenue just before 1:15 Sunday morning when 28-year-old Jaeticia Higgins refused to leave the apartment of a party who has an order of protection against her. Arriving officers found her hiding underneath a bed.

Once Higgins was placed into handcuffs, she allegedly went limp and had to be carried to the elevator, then outside to the squad car. As she was being carried, Higgins allegedly kicked and head-butted the officers multiple times.

Higgins is charged with two counts of Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations, one count of Interference With Official Acts and a No-Contact Order Violation. If convicted on all charges, she faces a maximum of 25 months in jail.

Higgins has recent convictions for hitting the protected party with a stick and biting him in separate incidents. She was given a suspended sentence after burglarizing Formosa on the Ped Mall in December, stealing over $500 in cash in the process. She is awaiting trial on a domestic abuse incident, as well as theft charges stemming from a shoplifting incident where she allegedly tried to steal 40 items from the downtown Iowa City Target in May.
