An Iowa City man was arrested Monday after allegedly setting up social media accounts under a University of Iowa detective’s name in order to harass and intimidate him.

According to the criminal complaint, Detective Ian Mallory testified at trial in February against 28-year-old Elizabeth Jorgensen and 26-year-old Isadora Kippes, who were found guilty of disorderly conduct for their role in protests on the University of Iowa campus in April and October 2023.

The same day the verdicts were reached, 29-year-old Daniel Kauble, who was sympathetic to the views and activities of the defendants, allegedly set up an email and an X account under Mallory’s name. He reportedly used the X account to disparage, annoy, harass, and engender public contempt for the detective.

On February 9th, Kauble allegedly sent a message to one of the protesters Mallory arrested and was set to stand trial in March. He stated that he hoped the posts he made under the fake accounts would make Mallory, quote, “hella mad.”

Mallory did not give consent for the accounts to be set up, nor was he aware they existed.

Kauble was charged Monday with Identity Theft, Tampering with a witness or juror, and 3rd degree Harassment.  If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to over four years in jail. Kauble was released on his own recognizance and will be arraigned at a later date.
