Iowa City Police have identified a Washington County man they say accompanied his roommate in the roommate’s effort to meet up with a minor for sexual purposes.

Just after 10:30 Wednesday morning, Aguilar arrived in a vehicle other than the one he had described to the girl, parked at a distance, and walked up with another man to the agreed-upon location. Arrest records indicate that location was The Quarters apartments on Highway 6 East.

Aguilar was detained. The other man…now identified as 33-year-old Kener Avilez…reportedly fled the scene. Police say Avilez ran north across Highway 6, then crossed a field, a creek, and several business parking lots before disappearing into a wooded area, He was located by a patrol unit on Village Road and taken into custody a short time later.

Aguilar is charged with Enticing a Minor Under the Age of 16 for Sexual Purposes, a Class D felony punishable by a prison sentence of up to five years, if convicted.

Avilez faces an Interference With Official Acts charge, punishable by up to 30 days in jail, if convicted.
