Hills firefighters were called to what they describe as a “multi-casualty incident” on southbound Highway 218 late Friday night, including almost a dozen people being transported to local hospitals.
According to a news release from the Hills Fire Department, just before 10:30 first responders were dispatched to a multi-vehicle accident near the Hills exit. Initial dispatch information reported four vehicles with multiple patients. The Riverside Fire Department was requested for assistance due to the large nature of the incident.
The first-arriving fire apparatus from Hills found a three-vehicle accident with more than six patients. All patients were found with minor injuries upon firefighters’ arrival. Hills personnel began the initial treatment and triage of patients until the Johnson County Ambulance Service could arrive. Due to the large number of identified patients, the incident was declared a multi-casualty incident.
Physicians from the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics responded in UIMED #1. In total, four ambulances from the Johnson County Ambulance Service responded with a total of ten patients being transported. The conditions of the patients are unknown.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
