University of Iowa Health Care is opening a first-of-its-kind clinic in the state to provide outpatient care for Iowans exposed to toxic substances.
According to a release from UIHC, the clinic’s aim will be to understand the root cause of symptoms quicker and more directly. Dr. Daniel McCabe, the director of the Division of Medical Toxicology, will run the clinic. He says this approach—versus ordering a myriad of tests—can be more cost-effective and efficient for the patient.
Initially, the clinic will operate every other Wednesday, only seeing patients by referral. Patients who think they may be a candidate for the clinic should first consult with their primary care provider.
Experts with the clinic will see patients experiencing health conditions related to heavy metal exposure with an emphasis on lead poisoning; toxic exposures which occurred during time in the military; pesticide exposure; and exposure to industrial chemicals and environmental hazards.
The Clinic will be the first and only clinic of its kind in Iowa and many of the surrounding states.
