A Coralville man with a history of domestic abuse charges could get jail time after another incident Monday night.

Officers were dispatched to the 1400 block of Valley Drive just before 10pm after a reported 911 hangup. Upon arrival, the victim was found in tears. Her daughter translated for her and told police that 33-year-old Carlos Henriquez Martinez got into an argument with the woman about him going to get more alcohol.  The woman said Martinez had been drinking, and tried to stop him. He allegedly reacted by kicking her in the leg and punching her on the back of the head, leaving her with a large bump.

The woman told Martinez she was going to call 911, which reportedly made him angrier. He allegedly threw a beer bottle at her, that missed and shattered on the wall.  He then got his girlfriend’s keys and went to Keystone Liquor on the Coralville Strip, where officers found him.

He was placed under arrest, and a search of his person reportedly turned up a small bag of marijuana and a pipe for smoking the substance.

Martinez had been wanted since May 2022 for two domestic incidents in which he allegedly pinned his wife against the wall and punched her in the face. The previous month, he reportedly kicked his wife and pushed her to the ground, causing a bleeding injury to her hand and knee.

For Monday night’s incident, Martinez was charged with 2nd offense Domestic Assault, marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia. He could be sentenced to a maximum 37 months in jail if convicted.

He faces another maximum three years if convicted on the previous two domestic incidents.

A no-contact order was requested between Martinez and his girlfriend.
