An Iowa City man was taken into custody after allegedly assaulting a man at an auto repair shop.

According to the arrest report, 35-year-old Ajay Phillips of Broadway Street went to Luis Auto Repair on Liberty Drive Monday evening just before 9:30 and made contact with the victim.  Phillips reportedly began yelling at the victim, informing the victim that he had weapons.

The victim tried to retreat inside the business, but Phillips allegedly punched the victim in the face. He remained on scene and officers located him nearby hiding in a vehicle.

After being placed under arrest for assault, Phillips was reportedly observed with bloodshot watery eyes and had the odor of ingested alcohol. He allegedly admitted to consuming alcohol at the scene of the altercation and parking his vehicle nearby.  After showing impairment on field tests, a PBT was given, showing Phillips’ breath-alcohol level at .186 percent. A subsequent Datamaster test gave a similar reading.

A check of Phillips’ driving record found a previous 2021 OWI in Johnson County.

He was charged with Assault and second offense OWI. If convicted on both charges, Phillips could be sentenced to up to 25 months in jail.
