An Iowa City man faces possible jail time after allegedly attempting to steal liquor from a southeast side convenience store.

Police say just before 6pm Thursday, 60-year-old Curtis Seals of Crosspark Avenue was observed on camera concealing a bottle of Hornitos Silver Tequila, bypassing all points of sale before leaving it inside the store’s restroom.

Upon contact, Seals reportedly had measurable signs of intoxication, including bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech, and a strong odor of alcohol emanating from his breath.  He refused a PBT.

Seals has two prior theft convictions in Johnson County back in 2014 and 2017. As such, the theft of the tequila, valued at $25.48, qualifies as a third degree theft. If convicted on the charge, Seals could be sentenced to up to two years in jail.

He also faces a Public Intoxication charge, a simple misdemeanor.
