A Cedar Rapids man who was found guilty of beating his mother to death in 2020 has been sentenced to 50 years in prison.
53-year-old George Deason was living with his mother in her southwest Cedar Rapids home on June 30th of that year when he assaulted her while trying to steal about $50.
Deason’s sister showed up the next day to find her mother scared and lying in bed with a comforter over her head. She told her daughter she covered up so Deason would stop beating her.
The woman died from her injuries about a month later. The state medical examiner said Deason died from complications brought on by traumatic brain injury.
George Deason was found guilty in a non-jury trial this past November. On Monday, he received his sentence, the harshest for 2nd degree Murder. He must serve at least 35 years before he’s eligible for parole.
