The deadline has passed to apply for an open seat on the Iowa City School Board, and that vacancy should be filled by the end of this month.
School board Vice President J.P. Claussen announced he was going to resign after he was offered a teaching job within the district. Claussen was first elected in 2017, and his term ends in 2025.
The board chose to fill the vacancy by appointment instead of holding a special election. Potential candidates had until Friday to submit applications for consideration. Now the school board will discuss the applicants at a special Monday night meeting that begins at 5:00 at the district headquarters on North Dodge Street. The board plans to vote on Claussen’s replacement at its regular Tuesday, June 11th meeting, with the newly-appointed board member taking over at the June 25th meeting.
If the board can’t decide on a new member within 30 days of learning of Claussen’s resignation, a special election will be held.
