A summer employment program geared at teens between 14 and 18 is returning this year.

According to a release from the Neighborhood Centers of Johnson County and Johnson County Social Services, the Youth Empowered to Serve, or YES employment program, is an 8-week internship initiative  tailored for youth aged 14 to 18. It provides work placements, financial literacy training, and on-the-job skills development opportunities in Iowa City and neighboring communities.

Participants will gain insights into various career paths and develop essential skills through job shadowing, hands-on projects, and authentic work experiences.

Interested youth must complete an online application by May 25th. Those selected  will begin an 8-week program on June 17th and work up to 10 hours per week. Additionally, they will have access to weekly trainings covering Mental Health, Financial Literacy, and team-building activities, providing a supportive environment for youth to explore interests and prepare for future career paths.

Applications can be completed online or in person at the Pheasant Ridge Neighborhood Center or Broadway Center.
