An Iowa City man was arrested this week after attempting to take items from a convenience store from which he had been previously trespassed.
According to the arrest report, 57-year-old Alonzo Smith of the Town and Campus Apartments on Arthur Street had been trespassed from the Kum & Go on Muscatine Avenue back in August. He entered the store at 11:30pm Thursday and allegedly made his way behind the counter and attempted to steal goods.
Smith was asked several times by Kum & Go staff to refrain from taking the items and to leave the store. Smith left without the items, but was located later by officers at the corner of 1st Avenue and Muscatine Avenue.
Staff positively identified Smith as the suspect who tried to steal items from the store. He was allegedly intoxicated, with a strong odor of alcohol. Smith reportedy admitted to having recently consumed some Don Julio tequila, but refused a post-arrest PBT.
Smith was charged with 2nd degree Attempted Burglary and Public Intoxication. If convicted on both counts, he could be sentenced to over five years in prison.
