A Coralville man was arrested Sunday night on a warrant stemming from an alleged drug deal.

According to the criminal complaint, 32-year-old Dedrick Smith of Stratford Court was observed on Burlington Street the afternoon of December 18th possessing and delivering 13 unknown pills.  The pills were described as orange in color, round and stamped with numbers on one side.

The pills were field tested and showed positive as a controlled substance. They were sent to the state’s criminal lab where they were confirmed to be buprenorphine, a Schedule III controlled substance used to treat pain and opioid use disorder.

Warrants were subsequently granted for Smith’s person, residence and vehicles.  On December 29th, a green baggie with a white powdery substance was located in a vehicle that was later tested positive for methamphetamine.

An arrest warrant was issued April 23rd, and Smith was booked at the Johnson County Jail Sunday night. He faces a Class C controlled substance violation and failure to affix drug stamp for the incident on December 18th, and a Class B controlled substance violation for meth possession. If convicted on all counts, Smith could face up to 40 years in prison.

Smith also faces an additional five years after an incident earlier this month when he allegedly returned to the place of employment he’d been fired from earlier in the day and was found with stolen construction materials.
