Information provided by the victim led to the arrest of an area transient on theft charges.
39-year-old Nicholas Anderson was reportedly seen riding a bicycle Sunday evening that belonged to the victim. She was able to follow Anderson and described her bike exactly. The victim had just reported her bike was stolen to the Iowa City Police Department on Friday.
Officers stopped Anderson, who claimed that he found the bike abandoned on the ground and had registered it on a bike index website with himself as the owner.
The stolen bike was a 2020 Trek Mountain Bike worth $650.
The victim had plenty of evidence proving the bike was hers, including the case number for the theft, a picture of the bike in her garage and the serial number.
Anderson was charged with 4th degree theft, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail sentence of up to a year if convicted.
