The latest rankings of the best public high schools across the country have been published by US News and World Report, with four area schools in the state’s top ten.

The publication takes into account the number of students who took at least one Advanced Placement exam, and those who passed at least one AP exam. Other factors include Math, Reading and Science Proficiency, and the graduation rate.

According to this year’s survey, West High is the number one public high school in the state. They have a graduation rate of 94% and an overall score of 96.45 out of 100 using their methodology.

Other schools in the top ten include Liberty High at #5, Williamsburg at #9 and City High is ranked 10th.

Although West High is ranked first in Iowa, it ranks 626th nationally. The top-ranked school in America is Basis Peoria out of Arizona, part of Basis Charter Schools Incorporated, a public charter school system with locations across the country. US News says 100 percent of their students are college-ready.
