The Iowa City Public Library Friends Foundation and the Iowa City Recycling Center have launched an initiative that will reuse and recycle used books instead of adding to the landfill.
Jane Wilch, Recycling Coordinator for the city, says the city will continue to recycle books that are past their use, but the initiative will take quality intact books and shipped to Thriftbooks Global LLC for resale. Proceeds from the sale of the items will then directly benefit the Iowa City Public Library.
Items will be accepted at the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center on Hebl Avenue Mondays through Saturdays from 7am to 4:30pm. Self-service book collection containers are located in the electronic recycling garage bay along the back wall. A maximum of six boxes of materials is allowed without appointment.
All types of books, including encyclopedias and textbooks, Audiobooks on CD and DVDs in original case will be accepted for resale.
The same items can be donated at the Iowa City Public Library, with a maximum of two boxes accepted. The only exception is they are not accepting encyclopedias and textbooks. Items donated there will be resold at the Book End store and benefit the library’s Friends Foundation.
