Citizen Police Review Boards could be banned if Iowa lawmakers have their way.
The Senate is forwarding a proposal that would ban cities from having the boards.
During debate on the issue, Democrats argued that the boards are needed to improve community relations and hold officers accountable, while Republicans say their removal would defend law enforcement and eliminates any conflict of interest.
The legislation, if it becomes law, would mean that Iowa City and Cedar Rapids would have to disband their Citizen Police Review boards.
The Senate passed the bill and is in committee at the House.
