An Iowa City woman faces a handful of charges after an altercation with police.

The incident occurred near the intersection of Dubuque and Wright streets at around 6:45pm Monday. Officers were called to the nearby Casey’s on East Benton Street for a male and female fighting. The woman was located just north of the store and was told why she was being stopped. She was identified as 34-year-old Alissa Walls of Friendship Street.

The officer said he was trying to get to the bottom of the altercation between Walls and the man, but she allegedly kept trying to walk away. Despite being told several times that she wasn’t free to leave, Walls went into the street. After being taken back to the grass, she allegedly hit the officer in the chest and arm as she tried to get away.  She was taken to the ground and reportedly continued to resist arrest as two officers attempted to handcuff her.

As she was being escorted to a squad car, Walls allegedly spit in the face of one officer and kicked at another, hitting him in the arm.

Walls now faces three counts of Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations and two counts of Interference with Official Acts. If convicted on all charges, she faces a jail sentence of up to 38 months.
