An Iowa City man was arrested last week after a drop-off of his kids with the children’s mother turned physical.
Police say the incident occurred at the Town and Campus Apartments on Arthur Street at around 12:30pm Thursday. The woman was at 31-year-old Devonte Flowers’ residence to drop their kids off for a visit. During the incident, Flowers allegedly became enraged and told the woman he was about to snap. He then reportedly grabbed the woman by the throat, choking her. Following that, Flowers is accused of pushing the woman to the ground. Once she got up, Flowers allegedly started choking her again. The woman told police that she pleaded with Flowers to stop and tried to leave the residence, but he physically blocked the door to prevent her.
Officers noted there was a bruise on the woman’s neck consistent with her story.
Flowers was informed by officers on scene that he was being placed under arrest. Flowers reportedly told them that he wasn’t going without a fight. He had to be taken to the ground and swatted at an officer’s taser. One officer reportedly was injured during the altercation.
Flowers had two prior domestic abuse convictions, the latest in September in 2022.
He was taken into custody and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault 3rd or subsequent offense; Domestic Abuse Assault impeding Airflow, False Imprisonment, Interference with Official Acts causing Bodily Injury, and two counts of Child Endangerment. If convicted on all counts, Flowers could be sentenced to up to sixteen years in prison.
