With bitterly cold and potentially dangerous temperatures impacting Iowa City this weekend and into the week, community members who need it are encouraged to take advantage of city facilities to stay warm.
Hours for the Iowa City Public Library on South Linn Street are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday – Thursday; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday; and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Please note due to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day the library’s hours will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday.
The Senior Center on South Linn Street will be open to the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday. The Senior Center will be closed Monday for MLK Day.
The Mercer Park Aquatic Center and Scanlon Gymnasium on Bradford Drive offers heated space as well as indoor opportunities. The facility is open Monday – Friday from 6:15 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturdays from 6:15 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sundays 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The Robert A. Lee Recreation Center on South Gilbert Street also offers heated space and indoor activities. Normal hours are Monday – Friday from 6:15 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturdays from 6:15 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sundays 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
And Shelter House’s winter emergency shelter is available to those in need at 340 Southgate Avenue. The shelter is open from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. seven days a week. The Emergency Shelter lobby at 429 Southgate Avenue remains open for anyone in the community who needs to keep warm, regardless of whether they have a bed at Shelter House or are a client.
