Another round of wintry weather is affecting the area, bringing with it temperatures below zero. The City of Iowa City recommends taking the following steps to prevent your water pipes and water meter from freezing:

  • Keep your heat set to at least 55 degrees at all times, including while you are away.
  • Ensure windows and outside doors are closed.
  • Keep interior doors and cabinets open, especially those containing plumbing such as kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms. This allows heated air to circulate, preventing your water meter and pipes from freezing.
  • Ask someone to check on your home while you are away and show them where the water shut-off valve is located, typically in the basement between the water meter and wall.
  • For water emergencies, call the 24/7 Water Division Emergency Line at 319-356-5166.

Also, the city has partnered with Service Line Warranties of America to offer service line insurance. Learn more at www.slwofa.com.
