Investigators have identified the sixth grader killed in Thursday morning’s shooting at Perry High School.

On Friday, the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigations announced 11-year-old Ahmir Joliff was shot three times by 17-year-old Dylan Butler. Joliff’s manner of death has been ruled a homicide, while Butler’s death was determined to be from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Perry High School Principal Dan Marburger and six others, including two staff members and four teenage students, were injured in the Thursday morning shooting.

The state Department of Public Safety said Marburger, who is being treated in a Des Moines hospital, “acted selflessly and placed himself in harm’s way in an apparent effort to protect his students.”

The investigation is ongoing.  Investigators say they have seized large volumes of digital and social media evidence that will take time to review.  Background investigations, as well as eyewitness accounts and victim interviews, are continuing.  Once the investigation is complete, the DCI’s investigative report will be turned over to the Dallas County Attorney’s Office to determine what additional course of action, if any, should be undertaken.
