A series of questionable decisions has led to the arrest of an Iowa City man.
Thursday night just before 8:30, 41-year-old Aaron Johnson of Iowa Avenue was called in because his car sound system was playing in violation of the city’s noise ordinance. Arriving officers reportedly found Johnson in the driver’s seat, intoxicated, and with a barred driving status until December 2025 for being an habitual offender.
Johnson was told that he could not be in physical contact with the vehicle while intoxicated and with the barred driving status, and was given an opportunity to rectify the issue. Instead, police say Johnson turned his car back on and revved his engine after they walked away.
Johnson reportedly had bloodshot watery eyes, impaired speech, unsteady balance, and had the odor of ingested alcohol. After showing impairment during field testing, he refused a PBT.
A check of Johnson’s criminal record showed OWI’s in Johnson County from 2016 and 2021. He was taken to the Iowa City Police Department for processing. While under arrest, Johnson allegedly called 911 and asked to speak to a supervisor.
Johnson was charged with OWI third offense and False 911 call. If convicted, he could be sentenced to over five years in prison.
