An Iowa City man faces multiple charges after allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase, abandoning the vehicle, and leaving drugs inside.
Police say just after 2am on November 26th, 33-year-old Percy Williams of Orchard Street was observed operating a white sedan near Linden Court and Court Street, going well over the posted 25-mile-per-hour speed limit. Although the officer activated his lights and siren, Williams reportedly sped away, turned off all his lights, and drove an estimated 60 miles per hour down Court Street.
Williams then allegedly drove recklessly near City High School, causing property damage. He then fled the vehicle, leaving it in a random driveway. Officers searching the sedan reportedly found his cellphone, an estimated 44 grams of Marijuana, and a vile with a white powdery substance consistent with cocaine.
An arrest warrant for Williams was issued November 30th; he was booked at the Johnson County Jail Tuesday night. He’s been charged with Reckless Driving, Eluding, Driving while Revoked, Marijuana Possession, a Controlled Substance Violation, and Keeping Vehicle for Controlled Substances. If convicted on all counts, Williams could be sentenced to up to 14 years in prison.
