A suspect faces charges that he assaulted and injured a downtown Iowa City bar employee by hitting the man in the face with a metal object, then biting him.

Iowa City Police say just before 1:15 Sunday morning they witnessed 25-year-old Satnam Singh of South Ozone Park, New York involved in a fight in the alley behind Gabe’s on East Washington Street. Singh reportedly dropped a large metal ring when confronted by officers.

An investigation determined that staff at Gabe’s had tried to keep Singh from returning to the bar after he was kicked out for fighting while celebrating his birthday. The alleged victim says Singh used the large, metal ring to assault him, causing a laceration to his face. Singh also reportedly bit the man twice, causing marks on his arms.

A post-arrest search of Singh’s person reportedly turned up a baggie of marijuana in his pocket. Singh is charged with Assault While Displaying a Weapon, Assault Causing Injury, Possession of a Controlled Substance and Public Intoxication. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of over four years in jail.
