An Iowa City man faces multiple charges after being stopped by a state trooper for reportedly speeding at over 100 miles per hour.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:50pm Friday.  33-year-old Shannon Poulin of Taft Avenue Southeast was observed heading southbound on highway 218 when a trooper clocked him going 108 miles per hour as he caught a truck.  Poulin reportedly pulled right over once the trooper left the median, before emergency lights were activated.

Upon contact, the odor of ingested alcohol was reportedly observed in the vehicle. Poulin was unable to provide a driver’s license, proof of insurance, or registration and was asked back to the squad car to complete paperwork.

Field tests were administered, during which Poulon allegedly interrupted the trooper and said he wasn’t being given a fair test.  He then refused to complete the testing and was arrested.

Poulon was taken to the Coralville Police Department for processing, and allegedly slammed his face into the trooper’s computer multiple times.  He refused to provide a urine sample.

A search of Poulon’s vehicle by a Johnson County  Deputy for inventory before it was towed off the road reportedly found ammunition and firearms. A check of records showed Poulon is ineligible to possess weapons due to a previous felony conviction. He also had previous OWI convictions in 2019 and earlier this year.

Poulon has been charged with OWI 3rd offense, driving while denied or revoked, person ineligible to carry dangerous weapons, possession or carrying weapons while intoxicated, dominion or control of a weapon by a felon, speeding, failure to provide financial responsibility, and open container in vehicle. If convicted on all counts, Poulon could be sentenced to up to 13 years in prison.
