An Iowa City man was arrested this week on a warrant stemming from his attempt this summer to obtain a firearm despite a felony conviction.

According to the arrest report, 75-year-old Thomas Kelly of Briar Drive tried to purchase a firearm at Fin and Feather on Highway 1 West the afternoon of July 11th.  Court records show that Kelly was convicted of falsely using a financial instrument back in 1987, but he reportedly indicated on his application that he was not a convicted felon.

Kelly was reportedly seen on surveillance cameras handling a weapon as he was attempting to purchase it.

A warrant was issued for his arrest, and he was booked at the Johnson County Jail Tuesday morning. Kelly has been charged with Dominion or Control of a Firearm as a Felon and providing False Information to Acquire a Weapon. If convicted on both counts, he could be sentenced to up to ten years in prison.
