A busy stretch of a downtown Iowa City street will be closed for construction for much of next year.
Earlier this week, the Iowa City City council unanimously approved a project that would require the closure of South Dubuque Street between Washington Street and Iowa Avenue. The estimated $3.75 million project would replace the pavement on the street and sidewalks, and also include improvements to sewer lines, water mains, lighting, parking meters and landscaping. The construction work would also include the alley that runs between the Sports Column and Studio 13.
City officials say sidewalk repairs mean businesses along the block may have to change their hours or temporarily close while the work is going on. The city will work with the affected businesses to minimize disruption, including suspended fees for outdoor cafes when they are forced to close.
Construction is expected to begin in the spring and be completed by fall of 2024.
