Iowa City man accused of forging $0.01 check to make it worth almost $1,000

The Johnson County Sheriff’s office says an Iowa City man forged a $0.01 check from the jail in order to change its value to almost $1,000.

33-year-old Demarco May of Sandusky Drive was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 8:30 Saturday night. Investigators say May was observed on ATM video from Hills Bank on the Coralville Strip depositing the check just before 2:45 p.m. on August 21st. The check was printed for $0.01 from the jail and was issued on November 2nd of last year. It had reportedly been altered by hand to change the value to $998.13. The date of issuance was also allegedly changed to July 2nd of this year.

May is charged with Forgery. If convicted he faces a maximum of five years in prison.
