An Iowa City man was picked up for OWI after allegedly crashing his car into a deck.
Police say 74-year-old Juan Velazquez was driving a 1999 Hyundai Elantra on the 800 block of Mgagard Street at around 8:25 pm Thursday when he was involved in a collision where he crashed into a deck attached to an apartment building, causing its collapse.
A check of Velazquez’s driving record showed his driving privileges were revoked for an OWI test failure from March of this year. After allegedly admitting to drinking, he showed measurable impairment on field testing and failed at PBT. A Datamaster test showed his BAC at .129 percent.
Velazquez was charged with OWI first offense and Driving while Revoked. If convicted on both counts, he could be sentenced to up to two years in jail. He has a case management conference scheduled for November 6th and trial on December 5th for the first OWI charge.
