The Iowa City Community School District plans to permanently remove over 60 books from local libraries in early 2024 to comply with a new law that bans books with descriptions or depictions of sex acts from school libraries.
Among the popular books on the list are “It,” “Handmaid’s Tale,” “Thirteen Reasons Why, “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” “The Color Purple,” and “101 Questions about Sex and Sexuality.”
The Press-Citizen reports the district released the list of books set for removal to parents and families on Monday, October 16th through a district-wide email.
In the email, Superintendent Matt Degner said the district will comply with the new requirements while, quote, “also maintaining our dedication to supporting our students and fostering safe, welcoming, and inclusive environments within our schools for all students.”
The review process is ongoing; the current list is subject to change before it’s finalized on January 1st.
