An area transient apparently treated himself to a shower and haircut when he broke into an Iowa City apartment earlier this month.
According to court records, 35-year-old Todd Brodie broke into an apartment on East Davenport Street the morning of October 7th. The victim’s apartment door was forced open, with a TV and IPhone 13 taken from the premises.
Evidence also reportedly showed that Brodie used the victim’s hair clippers to give himself a haircut, then used the shower and toilet. Brodie was identified as the suspect because he allegedly left behind some of his clothing and property, including a letter addressed to him from the DOT with a replacement ID card.
The victim also noticed that the door across the hall from them had also been forced open, with the interior ransacked. The victim in that apartment reported that a laptop computer was stolen. It was later recovered in another apartment in the building where Brodie had reportedly been staying temporarily and returned to its owner.
Brodie was located approximately a block away from the residence, and was reportedly intoxicated and hostile. He allegedly refused to identify himself, and attempted to walk away from officers.
Brodie was arrested and charged initially with public intoxication, interference with official acts, and outstanding arrest warrants on a probation revocation. The stolen IPhone 13 was allegedly found in Brodie’s backpack.
He now faces two counts of 3rd degree burglary and could be sentenced to up to ten years in prison if convicted on both charges.
