An Iowa City man was taken into custody over the weekend after assaulting his girlfriend for the third time in the last two years.

Officers were called to the West Side Drive apartment of 30 year-old Jarvarise Harper just before 8:30pm Saturday on reports of a domestic assault in progress. Harper was reportedly in a physical fight with his girlfriend, and allegedly punched her two times in the face. The woman reportedly suffered swelling on her left eye.

The arrest report noted that Harper had two previous domestic assault convictions; in March and July of last year. It was also noted that his girlfriend was the victim in both incidents.

The couple has been in a relationship for three years, and were living together at the time of the latest incident.  They have a shared child, and two minor children were reportedly present during Saturday’s incident.

Harper was charged with Domestic Abuse Assault 3rd offense, and two counts of Child Endangerment. If convicted on the charges, he could be sentenced to up to nine years in prison.  A no-contact order was requested between the couple.
