A North Liberty woman claimed she was “trying to be a good friend” when allegedly arrested for stealing groceries Friday.

The incident occurred at the Coralville Walmart on Commerce Drive just before 5 pm. Officers were called to the store on report of a theft of groceries.  The reporting party alleged that 19-year-old Amberly Robbins of Holiday Lodge Road pushed a full shopping cart of unpurchased items past all points of sale without making any attempt at payment.  When confronted by authorities, Robbins reportedly said she didn’t have a good reason why she took the items, but continued to tell them she was “trying to be a good friend, and get food for everyone.”

Robbins was allegedly caught on closed circuit surveillance footage, as well as physically seen committing the act by Walmart loss prevention employees.

In total, Robbins reportedly tried to take over 150 items valued at over $550. She was charged with 4th degree theft, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail term of up to one year if convicted.
